Every year, as the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) begins deliberating on its Lifetime Achievement Award, a familiar debate plays out across the industry. Who deserves the honour? Should it recognise business success, creative brilliance, institution building or contribution to the profession? There are never easy answers because Indian advertising has produced many outstanding leaders.
This year, among the names doing the rounds, two stand out for reasons that go well beyond the agencies they worked for. Ambi Parameswaran and Santosh Desai have built careers that have influenced not only brands and businesses but also the way generations of advertising professionals think. If the Lifetime Achievement Award is meant to honour those who have left a lasting imprint on Indian advertising, both deserve serious consideration.
Ambi Parameswaran's journey is an example of quiet leadership. An IIT Madras graduate who later completed his management education at IIM Calcutta, he began his career at Rediffusion before returning to advertising after a brief stint in marketing. His defining years, however, came at Ulka Advertising.
When Ambi joined Ulka, the agency was rebuilding itself after founder Bal Mundkur's exit. Those were challenging years, but they also became the foundation of one of Indian advertising's most remarkable success stories. Along with Anil Kapoor in the early years and later Shashi Sinha, Ambi helped transform Ulka into one of the country's most respected agencies. It was never just about winning accounts. It was about creating an organisation that clients trusted and professionals aspired to join.
People who worked with Ambi often speak about his calm demeanour, meticulous preparation and ability to simplify complex marketing problems. He never sought the spotlight, yet his influence was visible in almost every important decision. His leadership style demonstrated that successful agencies are built through consistency, trust and nurturing people rather than by personalities alone.
What makes Ambi's contribution particularly significant is that it did not stop with agency leadership. He chose to give back to the profession. Through a series of books on branding, consumer behaviour and advertising, he documented experiences that otherwise would have remained confined to boardrooms. In an industry that rarely records its own history, Ambi became one of its most thoughtful chroniclers.
His contribution as a teacher and mentor is equally noteworthy. As an adjunct faculty member at leading management institutions, he has interacted with hundreds of aspiring marketers and advertising professionals. Many of today's senior executives have either learnt directly from him or have been influenced by his books and lectures. Even after retiring from executive responsibilities, he continues to write, speak and participate in industry discussions with the same curiosity that defined his career.
If Ambi represents institution building, Santosh Desai represents intellectual leadership.
An MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, Santosh held several senior leadership positions before becoming President of McCann Erickson India. But titles alone do not explain his stature within the industry. His real contribution has been in changing the way marketers understand consumers.
Long before words such as "cultural insights" became fashionable, Santosh was explaining why brands needed to understand the social and emotional context in which consumers live. He looked beyond research reports and numbers to decode aspirations, anxieties and everyday behaviour. That ability made him one of the country's most respected strategic planners and thinkers.
His influence extends far beyond the campaigns he helped shape. Through his books and his widely read Chitty Chitty Bang Bang column in The Times of India, Santosh has consistently challenged conventional thinking. His writing blends marketing, sociology, psychology and culture in a way that very few advertising professionals have managed. Whether he writes about changing family structures, technology, politics or consumer behaviour, his observations provoke discussion because they are rooted in an understanding of Indian society.
Unlike many industry leaders who retreat from public discourse after stepping down from executive roles, Santosh has remained an active participant in debates around brands, media and culture. Students, marketers, entrepreneurs and journalists continue to seek his views because he brings perspective rather than mere opinion.
There is another reason why both Ambi Parameswaran and Santosh Desai deserve recognition. They have always been generous with their knowledge. Neither has treated experience as something to be guarded. Through books, lectures, articles, mentoring sessions and countless industry interactions, they have invested time in helping young professionals become better marketers and better communicators. That is a contribution which cannot be measured through balance sheets or award cabinets.
Advertising is changing faster today than perhaps at any other time in its history. Artificial intelligence, automation, creator economies and data-driven marketing are redefining the profession. Yet the qualities that both these leaders championed remain timeless—curiosity, strategic thinking, respect for consumers, ethical leadership and a commitment to continuous learning. Technology may change how campaigns are delivered, but it does not replace wisdom or judgement.
The AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award has always represented more than recognition for a successful career. At its best, it acknowledges those who have strengthened the profession itself. Ambi Parameswaran built institutions, documented knowledge and mentored generations. Santosh Desai challenged conventional wisdom and expanded the intellectual boundaries of advertising in India. Their contributions are different, but they are equally enduring.
Every year there will be several deserving candidates for the award, and the jury's task is never an easy one. But if the objective is to honour leaders whose influence extends well beyond their own agencies, whose ideas continue to shape the profession and whose legacy will outlive their careers, then it would be difficult to overlook Ambi Parameswaran and Santosh Desai.
Recognition at this stage of their careers would not merely celebrate two outstanding individuals. It would also acknowledge the enduring value of leadership, scholarship and mentorship—qualities that have always defined the very best of Indian advertising.
By choosing either both or one of these fine gentlemen, AAAI will bring some sheen back to this award.
The reason I have chosen to write about these two and endorse them is because I and e4m have knowledge that they are the two frontrunners for this award, and one of them is likely to be awarded.
